Blu Ray Review – John Wick 3

We look at the blu ray release of one of the most fun action movies of the year, John Wick 3, which has excellent features.

Keanu Reeves is really having a moment in 2019 and the crown jewel of his entire year (so far) has hands-down got to be the mind-blowing action spectacle of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. The star has never been better and director Chad Stahelski’s command of visual storytelling also tops the two legendary chapters that came before. Defying normal Hollywood logic, this series actually gets more entertaining and artistically polished with each successive movie. John Wick is now an undeniable icon.

Picking up right where John Wick: Chapter 2 ended, our hero is immediately on a countdown to a pricy contract set on his head for a murder committed on the sacred grounds of The Continental. Racing against time and approximately 50% of New York City’s population, John’s resourcefulness leads him to help from friends played by Anjelica Huston and Halle Berry who both inject a healthy dose of fresh energy into this world. Lance Reddick, Laurence Fishburne, and Ian McShane all return to flesh out their already-established characters in surprising new ways.

Chapter 3 displayed some superhero-level box office power this summer, showing a rare jump in growth for an adult-skewing action franchise. Huge bank begets studio demand for more so the film’s success nicely coincides with the heavy cliffhanger we’re left on. It’s no surprise that a Chapter 4 is officially forthcoming and I, for one, welcome as many more installments as the creative team wishes to share.

This home video release of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is bursting at the seams with bonus content for lovers of this franchise and movies in general. There’s a bevy of featurettes that go inside the moviemaking magic and series mythology that help make the John Wick flicks so endearing to audiences worldwide. 4K and Blu-ray features include:

  • “Parabellum: Legacy of the High Table” Featurette
  • “Excommunicado” Featurette
  • “Check Your Sights” Featurette
  • “Saddle Up Wick” Featurette
  • “Bikes, Blades, Bridges, and Bits” Featurette
  • “Continental in the Desert” Featurette
  • “Dog Fu” Featurette
  • “House of Transparency” Featurette
  • “Shot by Shot” Featurette
  • Theatrical Trailer #1
  • Theatrical Trailer #2
  • John Wick HexGame Trailer
  • “Behind the Scenes of John Wick Hex” Featurette

The featurette breakdowns on the work involving the horses and dogs are of particular note as our four-legged amigos get in on the action for the first time in the John Wick movies instead of serving as the catalyst for three movies’ worth of ass-kicking vengeance.

Whether you’re a fan of the series or an action genre junkie, this release is a necessary addition to your collection. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is now available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital.
